Compleet vertekend is a collection of painted and drawn women whose absurd demeanour forms a language that seeks not to please, but to disrupt. From a feminist and autobiographical perspective, Erika Cotteleer depicts how images of the female body are deformed by social, male, and comparative gazes, “completely distorted” by decades of judgment and comparison.

It is Erika Cotteleer’s act of resistance against the gaze that seeks to tame them, refusing to smooth over or conceal their aging bodies. She draws their encounters; rituals of liberation in which they participate shamelessly, bravely, reassured, bored, defiant, or dead, yet always fully aware of themselves. They plead to own their bodies, their mental state, and their sexuality.
