The Grafixx Book Club is not a traditional book club, but rather a meeting with creators. Ben Gijsemans, Charlotte Peys, and Bart Schoofs join us and, together with the audience, leaf through their most cherished sources of inspiration, talk about how their own work comes about, and delve into publications they discovered through Grafixx.
BEN GIJSEMANS
Ben Gijsemans (born 1989) is a Belgian comic book and animated film maker. He studied audiovisual arts at the School of Arts in Ghent and then spent a year studying comic strip art at Sint-Lukas Brussels. His final project, Hubert, was published in 2014 and immediately marked his international breakthrough. His subsequent books Aaron (2020), De kerkgangers (2022), De tooghangers (2023) and De naamloze vogel (2025) are also characterised by sober drawings, quiet observations and a strong focus on the inner world of his characters.
CHARLOTTE PEYS
Charlotte Peys (born 1987) studied cultural sciences in Maastricht and illustration in Ghent. She considers drawing and writing to be relational matters. It is a matter of drawing lines, revealing underlying connections, unfolding spaces. In her work, she always seeks the most appropriate form to facilitate conversation. She draws lines between human and non-human, between what was and what is, between fact and fiction, between people and their environment, and she is hungry for projects that focus on connection and encounter with everything around us.
BART SCHOOFS
Bart Schoofs (°1969) is an illustrator and part-time collector of bodily fluids. His work appears weekly in Knack and De Bond. Last year, Morgen weer een brt (Oogachtend) was published, a collection of one-page comic strips.
