In a live book club, authors Wide Vercnocke, Steve Michiels and Chiara Lammens dust off their bookshelves with moderator Obi Mundorff, while laying bare their creative souls. They talk about their own recent publications, share some sources of inspiration, and walk the audience through some of their favourite books found at Grafixx.
Wide Vercnocke
Wide Vercnocke describes himself as a ‘writer and illustrator of tear-jerkers’. In his graphic novels, he combines a fascinating drawing style with often abstract but poetic stories, in which physicality plays an important role. Language and image are given equal weight, and Vercnocke plays deftly with both. He is building an oeuvre that is impressively unique and unconventional.
Chiara Lammens
Chiara Lammens is an illustrator and art teacher who draws and paints with nature as her source of inspiration. In meticulously painted scenes she depicts a world that is in certain ways similar to our own, often landscapes in extraordinary colour combinations.
Steve Michiels
Steve Michiels is an illustrator, cartoonist and visual artist. He has published in various magazines and newspapers such as Knack, Humo, de Standaard, De Morgen, De Tijd, NRC-Handelsblad, VPRO Magazine, Fluide Glacial and many others. As a lecturer/researcher, he is attached to Luca School of Arts where he teaches illustration and conducts artistic research on ‘the cartoonist’s desired self-censorship’
