Lecture

Grafixx EXTD. #3 © Lukas Verstraete

This third edition was dedicated to typography and brought an exhibition of posters by designer Paul Cox and fascinating lectures. Author Joke van Leeuwen came to talk about the role of typography in her extensive oeuvre. Cartoonist Lukas Verstraete played a game of graphic ping-pong with designer Broos Stoffels. And notorious designer Gert Dooreman was interviewed by art expert Johan Pas. An artistic programme around letter fun!

PAUL COX

Creative jack-of-all-trades Paul Cox is a painter, designer, installation artist and illustrator. His children’s books are popular as far away as Japan because of their conceptual slant. He drew costumes and sets for several theatre and opera productions, and has already exhibited at the Centre Pompidou. This retrospective offers a selection of posters from the renowned self-taught artist’s personal archive.

GERT DOOREMAN x JOHAN PAS

Dooreman’s work has been burned into our collective memory for decades. He gave shape to Tom Lanoye’s poem that highlighted Antwerp’s Boerentoren life-size in 2004. Dooreman designed numerous book covers and the interiors of influential Flemish novels and children’s books. He also designed posters for major clients such as the Boekenbeurs. And despite his love of letters, Dooreman graduated as a gifted draughtsman in Free Graphics.

JOKE VAN LEEUWEN

At Grafixx EXTD. #3, Joke van Leeuwen (including Hier, Nu is later vroeger, Hee daar mijn twee voeten and Levenslust, een gedicht) situates the interaction between word and image on the basis of some historical images. She shows how she combines or merges text and drawings in different ways. Joke writes, draws and performs, both for adults and children. She has published novels and poetry for adults, prose and verses for children and a few non-fiction books. Her work has been widely translated and awarded.

LUKAS VERSTRAETE x BROOS STOFFELS

Lukas Verstraete and Broos Stoffels got to know each other during their studies at LUCA School of Arts, Campus Sint-Lucas Ghent, thanks in part to their shared passion for visual storytelling. In 2017, they worked together for the first time to design the cover of Lukas’ debut album Een boek waarmee men vrienden maakt. In 2019, the French translation of the book was published, for which Broos again designed the title.
